BOWLING GREEN, Ohio -- The Central Michigan softball team dropped its Mid-American Conference opener on Friday, 8-0, to Bowling Green at the Falcons' Meserve Softball Field.
Bowling Green pitcher Payton Gottshall struck out three in throwing a no-hitter and the game was called after 4 ½ innings because of the run rule.
CMU sophomore Kelsy Alexander made a bid to break up the no-hitter when her fly ball to left field with two out in the fifth inning was ruled an error.
The Chippewas are 2-8. Bowling Green improved to 9-7.
Freshmen pitcher Grace Lehto (2-5) struck out four over 2 1/3 innings in taking the loss. Lehto has struck out 40 in 36 1/3 innings this season. She allowed six runs on four hits and walked five. Junior Kaitlyn Bean pitched 1 2/3 innings in relief.
The teams are scheduled to play a doubleheader on Saturday (1 p.m.) and close the four-game series on Sunday (noon).
"Tomorrow is a new day, a new opportunity, and we have to approach it that way," CMU coach McCall Salmon said. "We know what we need to do, we know that we can do it, it is just a matter of executing and winning each pitch.
"We just have to focus on winning every game and winning every series. We have a lot in front of us still this season and this weekend to go make plays and come out on top. Every series is going to be this way, a battle. Every team is going to compete every single game. It is going to be a matter of being consistent."
