This new program is designed to prepare student-athletes for the NCAA’s pending name, image and likeness legislation.
Central Michigan Athletics' latest demonstration of its commitment to developing student-athletes on and off the field is the creation of Cultivating Opportunity and Responsibility Education for Name, Image, and Likeness, or C.O.R.E. (NIL). This innovative and exciting new program is designed to prepare student-athletes for the NCAA's pending name, image and likeness (NIL) legislation.
"Through C.O.R.E. (NIL), we will provide our student-athletes with the education, knowledge and resources needed to allow them to maximize their opportunities within this new arena," said Amy Folan, the Zyzelewski Family Associate Vice President/Director of Athletics. "We are excited to coordinate with campus partners to equip our student-athletes with the tools they will need to be successful."
C.O.R.E. (NIL) is a comprehensive program designed to educate student-athletes in the areas of marketing and brand management, entrepreneurship, financial literacy, business law and business relationships.
CMU Athletics has partnered with industry experts and campus collaborators to create interactive and specialized content for student-athletes. The members of the current working group include:
Once adopted, NIL legislation will allow student-athletes to use their name, image and likeness to receive compensation from promoting camps and clinics, private lessons, their own products and services, and commercial products or services. It will also allow student-athletes to crowdfund for nonprofits or charitable organizations and enlist professional advice and marketing assistance regarding their NIL activities.
C.O.R.E. (NIL) is part of CMU Athletics department's overarching student-athlete development program, The Chippewa Way. The Chippewa Way provides opportunities for student-athlete growth and enhancement in personal, professional and leadership development; diversity, equity, and inclusion; mental health, and community outreach.
"We are dedicated to cultivating our CMU Chippewas to become not only leaders at Central Michigan and in the MAC, but also as leaders in life," Folan said.
The addition of C.O.R.E (NIL) to The Chippewa Way will augment a CMU student-athlete collegiate experience as well as provide fundamental tools, skills and knowledge to prepare for life after college.
