KENT, Ohio – A record-setting day for Natalie Karlen and a top-10 kind of day for the Central Michigan lacrosse program.
Karlen scored 10 goals and finished with 13 points – both program records – in leading the Chippewas to a 21-14 Mid-American Conference victory over Kent State at the Golden Flashes' Dix Stadium on Thursday.
The win lifted the Chippewas to 5-5, 3-1 MAC, and it came five days after the Chippewas dropped their first league game of the season, to Robert Morris.
Karlen, a senior from Hagerstown, Md., broke Anna Schoonover's CMU record of seven goals, set on March 21, 2019, vs. Marquette. Karlen broke her own record for points in a game (9), which she set at Furman on April 13, 2018.
Karlen now has 207 career points, a Chippewa record, and she is the first in program history to surpass the 200-point milestone. She has 46 on the season (36 goals, 10 assists). She had 14 shots including 12 on goal on Thursday. Both are program records.
Karlen scored a little over a minute into the game and the Chippewas never trailed. She scored with 18:17 left in the half to trigger a 5-0 CMU run to close the half as the Chippewas led 11-5 at the break. Karlen scored four goals during the surge.
"I give a lot of credit to Nat Karlen," CMU coach Sara Tisdale said. "She demonstrated great leadership on the field and really worked well with her teammates."
Karlen's 10 goals are tied for third-most in NCAA history and are the most since 2004 when Tiffany Pulaski of Temple posted 10 against Lafayette. Her 13 points in a single game also ranks third in the NCAA record books and is the most since 2008 when Syracuse's Katie Rowan totaled five goals and eight assists versus Towson.
Maggie Diebold added a career-high four goals for CMU and Tyra Prince had three.
The Chippewas outshot Kent State, 36-26, with 29 shots on goal to Kent State's 20. CMU's 29 shots on goal rank as the sixth-highest total in program history, and its 36 shots are tied for eighth.
CMU's 21 goals ties for the second most in program history and its 28 points ties for the eighth most in a single game.
"We transitioned the ball very well," Tisdale said. "Overall, I think our transition game has always been our strength and it definitely shined today."
The Chippewas are scheduled to play at Akron in a MAC game on Saturday (1 p.m.).
