MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. – Former Central Michigan offensive tackle Joe Staley has been named to the Senior Bowl Hall of Fame.
Staley, who played at CMU from 2003-06 and was a captain of the '06 team that won the Mid-American Conference Championship, will be inducted in June during a ceremony at the hall, which is located in Mobile, Ala.
He is part of a 2021 class that includes cornerback Patrick Surtain, running back Fred Taylor, wide receiver Reggie Wayne, and defensive end Cam Jordan. All four, like Staley, went on to standout NFL careers after appearing in the Senior Bowl.
"Being invited to play in the Senior Bowl was a huge deal for me coming out of Central Michigan," Staley said. "It offered me an opportunity to compete against the very best in the country and show what I could do as a player. It is a great honor to be selected to the Senior Bowl Hall of Fame and join so many athletes that I look up to and have competed with or against over the years."
Staley, a native of Rockford, utilized a rare blend of size, speed, strength and athleticism in becoming a First Team All-Mid-American Conference selection by his senior year at CMU and was a linchpin during a golden age of Chippewa football.
He is scheduled to be inducted into the Marcy Weston Central Michigan University Athletics Hall of Fame in 2021.
Staley appeared in 47 games in a Chippewa uniform, moving from tight end to tackle after his freshman season. He was selected by the San Francisco 49ers in the first round of the 2007 NFL Draft and went on to a sensational 13-year NFL career. He was named All-Pro three times, was voted to the Pro Bowl five times, played in two Super Bowls, and was named to the NFL 2010s All-Decade Team. He retired after the 2019 season having played in 181 games, all of them starts.
