MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. -- Natalie Karlen scored six goals and, in the process, became Central Michigan's career scoring leader on Saturday as the Chippewas rolled past Akron, 18-6, in a Mid-American Conference lacrosse game at the CMU Soccer/Lacrosse Complex.
It was CMU's second-consecutive win as it improved to 8-6, 6-2.
Karlen, a senior from Hagerstown, Md., surpassed Jocelyne Lemay to become the Chippewas' career goals leader. Lemay scored 163 goals from 2015-19. Karlen entered Saturday's game with 162 and she tied Lemay when she scored just 4:20 into the game off a Maggie Diebold assist.
The record-breaking goal came with 19:42 left in the first half, assisted by Amanda Hilderbrandt, and it put the Chippewas up, 7-0.
"In her time here, Nat has played a really fun game," CMU coach Sara Tisdale said. "She plays with such an ease, and today her teammates set her up for success. Credit to Amanda Hilderbrandt and Maggie Diebold who were able to find Nat at the right place at the right time. That is what a veteran offense looks like."
With her six goals in Saturday's game, Karlen has 168 in her career. She has two games remaining as a Chippewa: Monday at Detroit Mercy, and Saturday, May 8, at home against Youngstown State.
"She will be hard to catch after this, and there is a lot of credit due to the work she has put in and everyone who has invested in her along the way," Tisdale said. "It has been a fun career for her, and an absolute privilege to be a part of it."
Diebold added five goals, Courtney Burke had three, and Tyra Prince added two.
Hilderbrandt, a sophomore, finished with six assists, tying for the second-highest total for a single game in program history.
Chippewa goalkeeper Sierra Savage made seven saves in 38 minutes; Erin Owens posted two saves over the final 22 minutes.
