Amy Folan's Maroon & Gold Message
Greetings from Mount Pleasant! I hope you have had a great start to your summer. I have already traveled a little bit at the beginning of mine, to Indiana to watch our baseball team compete in the 2021 South Bend Regional! During my trip home from South Bend, I reflected on all the great things that have happened at CMU Athletics over the past few weeks. There is a real momentum within our department as we wrap up the academic year and begin to plan for a strong fall.
Of course, our baseball program just capped off another outstanding season, winning the Mid-American Conference championship and advancing to the NCAA Tournament for the second-straight season. The team showed their strength during the Regional, defeating Michigan, 8-2, and UConn, 14-9, before falling to the Fighting Irish in the finals. Plus, they were the first MAC program to advance to the regional finals since 2012.
The victory over Michigan came in front of a national audience on ESPN2 and it was a fantastic showcase of the great things CMU sport programs represent. Our student-athletes and coaches met the challenge of playing a national powerhouse and in-state rival head on and with real grit. I am so proud of the job Coach Bischel and his staff have done and the outstanding student-athletes that we have in our program.
Â
Most importantly, our student-athletes had another fantastic semester in the classroom, posting a cumulative grade point average of 3.281 for the spring semester This marks the 45th consecutive semester of our student-athletes collectively achieving a 3.0 or higher! Overall, 287 student-athletes earned a GPA of 3.0 or higher this past spring, and 53 posted a perfect 4.0. These numbers demonstrate the resilience of our student-athletes and their aptitude for overcoming unique challenges. Their academic achievement is inspiring, and pushes us to worker even harder to ensure each student-athlete leaves CMU with a diploma in one hand and championships rings on the other.
I am also so proud of the team culture of genuine relationships and friendships that our student-athletes build during their time at CMU. A recent social media post by junior baseball pitcher, Jordan Patty, really resonated with me. He responded back to a celebratory tweet from President Davies on Best Friends Day saying, "The whole squad @CMUBaseball, these dudes are ones that I'll cherish forever. Coming in as a freshman, I would have never thought that they would mean so much to me. Fire Up Forever."
The great health of our teams across athletics, academics and personal relationships are powerful examples of the incredible impact that being a student-athlete at CMU carries. It is an experience that shapes our CMU Chippewas forever because, here at CMU, they develop the character to become future leaders in our communities and around the world. While it is easy to judge a department by wins and losses, it important not to lose sight of the great wealth that being a student-athlete holds for personal development and long-term success.
In our aim to enrich and round out the experience of being a student-athletes at CMU, we have also made great strides with our programming related to leadership and diversity, equity and inclusion. We recently launched a new DEI website to showcase these efforts. I want to thank our DEI Council for their outstanding leadership in building out this program and collaborating with campus partners to enhance the educational support now available for our student-athletes, coaches and staff. We are also working hard to create educational programming for our student-athletes related to the upcoming changes to the name, image and likeness rules.
The fantastic accomplishments in South Bend and shared above would not have been possible without all our amazing donor and fan support. One of the best things about the spring season is that we finally had everyone back in the stands to cheer on our student-athletes. It has been so fun to see you all again and to feel the electric energy you bring to gamedays. I received so many comments from friends and peers about the excellent show of support during we had at the baseball regional tournament, and how invested people are in the success of our programs.
Finally, as our fiscal year 2020-21 wraps up, I extend my sincerest gratitude and thanks to our loyal donors who have made gifts to our programs and helped to bring about the array of wonderful successes at CMU Athletics this year. Your support has a clear and direct impact on the lives of our student-athletes by ensuring that they receive the exceptional experience we strive to provide.
If you would like to support the wonderful things happening at CMU Athletics, there is still time to make a gift online and help us finish the year even stronger. Our Chippewa Athletic Fund team is available to assist you and can be reached at (989) 774-6680 or chipclub@cmich.edu.
I can't wait until competition kicks off again in August. Have a safe and enjoyable summer and, as always, Fire Up Chips!
