Volleyball Wins Season Opener In 4 Sets

PEORIA, Ill. – Savannah Thompson had 16 kills and 23 digs on Friday as the Central Michigan volleyball team opened the season with a four-set victory over host Bradley in the CEFCU Invitational at the Braves' Renaissance Coliseum.
The Chippewas captured the match, 25-18, 22-25, 25-21, 25-15, winning their opener for the fifth-consecutive season.
CMU is scheduled to play two matches in the invitational on Saturday. The Chippewas are set to play DePaul (0-1) at 10 a.m. and then close the event against Southeast Missouri State (1-0) at 4:30 p.m. SEMO defeated the Blue Demons in four sets on Friday.
Also for CMU, Anna Erickson added 11 kills as did freshman Linnea Willer who was playing in her first collegiate match. Chippewa libero Aly Gurtiza, another freshman playing her first match in a Chippewa uniform, finished with a team-best 29 digs.
Setters Kamryn Olson and Grace Butler finished with 26 and 20 kills, respectively, for CMU, which posted with a .232 hitting percentage while holding the Braves to .120.
Set 1: The Chippewas broke a 10-10 tie and took the lead for good with three consecutive points on a kill and an ace by Thompson and a kill by Erickson. CMU led by four, 22-18, and scored the final three points on kills by Maddie Whitfield and Erickson and a Bradley attack error.
Set 2: CMU grabbed the lead and held it until Bradley seized a 15-14 advantage. The rest of the way was tight with neither team leading by more than two points until Bradley extended it to three, 24-21. The Chippewas managed to stave off set point, cutting it to 24-22, but the Braves got the set winner on a kill from Rachel Pranger.
Set 3: The Chippewas jumped to a 4-0 lead and extended it to 10-3 and never trailed. Bradley crept to within two, 12-10, but CMU responded by scoring seven of the next 10 points for a 19-13 advantage. The Braves managed to trim their deficit to three, 24-21, but the Chippewas got the set point on a Bradley attack error.
Set 4: CMU broke away, snapping a 6-6 tie with three consecutive points on kills by Rosario-Martinez, Thompson, and Whitfield for a 9-6 advantage. CMU upped its lead to 14-7 and the Braves never got closer than six the rest of the way.
