OXFORD, Ohio – The Central Michigan soccer team opened Mid-American Conference play in heartbreaking fashion, dropping a 1-0 overtime decision to Miami (Ohio) at Bobby Kramig Field in Oxford.
The loss ended CMU's win streak at three games. Central Michigan is 3-4-0 and is set to entertain Ball State on Sunday, Sept. 26 (1 p.m.) in its first home league match of the season at the CMU Soccer Complex. The Cardinals drew with Eastern Michigan, 0-0, in their MAC opener to move to 2-4-1 on the season
CMU battled the RedHawks even for 97 minutes before freshman midfielder Makenna Morrison scored the game winner, following up a shot by Haley Anspach, who earned an assist on the play.
CMU had some prime looks on goal in the second half but suffered some bad luck. In the 80th minute, a Laila Arab offering, which would have put Central Michigan in the lead with 15 minutes of regulation remaining, skimmed off the crossbar.
The RedHawks outshot the Chippewas, 17-11, including a 9-3 edge in shots on goal. CMU goalkeeper Allison LaPoint made eight saves.
