SHEPHERD, Mich. -- The Central Michigan University cross country team kicked off its 2021 season on Friday at the annual Jeff Drenth Memorial on the Shepherd High School 5K course, competing head-to-head against Michigan State.
"I'm super proud of what we did today, I think everybody just went out and gave it everything they had and that's all you can ask for, especially the first meet of the season," CMU director of track & field/cross country Jenny Swieton said.
Sophomore Emily Paupore was CMU's top finisher, placing third, with a time of 18:15.3. MSU's Emily Bardwell won the race.
CMU's Lauren Beckmann (fifth), Annie Bennett (seventh) and Maddy Boyd (ninth) also finished in the top 10.
Adam Rzentkowski was the top CMU men's runner, placing second in 15:13.8. CMU's Owen Howard placed eighth and Riad Rababeh finished 10th.
Swieton said she is hopeful that her will continue to improve throughout the season.
"Last year, our first meet was Oct. 31, so it was two months later, but a lot of them ran comparable times (today) to what they ran two months later last year," she said. "If we're already here in early September, where are we going to be once it gets to October and the MAC meet comes?"
The Chippewas will see Michigan State again at the Spartan Invitational on Sept. 17.
