EAST LANSING, Mich. – Emily Paupore finished 30th in the women's race and Adam Rzentkowski was 23rd in the men's race to lead the Central Michigan cross country teams on Friday at the Michigan State Spartan Invitational.
"I'm really happy with our effort today," CMU coach Jenny Swieton said. "We're not where we want to be by the end of the season, but I think we definitely put in the effort today that we needed to."
The Chippewa women finished eighth with 238 points in the 21-team women's field. Michigan State, which is ranked fifth nationally, won the event with 36 points.
The CMU men finished 11th with 315 points. Twenty-two teams comprised the field. Grand Valley State won the men's event with 35 points.
Paupore finished the women's race, a 6K, in 23:02.08. Also for CMU, Anya Turner was 59th, Lauren Beckmann finished 66th, Jelena Prescott was 70th, and Natalie Newcombe came in 78th.
"We had some huge breakthrough performances," Swieton said. "Anya Turner and Jelena Prescott, their races gave me chills."
Rzentkowski posted a 25:46.2 clocking in the men's race, an 8K. Also for the CMU men, Owen Howard was 62nd, Riad Rababeh was 74th, Hunter Fougner finished 120nd, and Gabe Goosen came in 148th.
"To be honest, we were super excited and went out too aggressive, and it's really hot today," Swieton said. "I'd rather them go out too aggressive and really confident and excited to race and then learn from that."
The Chippewas will race again on Oct. 1 at the Joe Piane Notre Dame Invitational in South Bend, Ind.
