Kauflin leads CMU with second-round 72
KEWADIN, Mich. – Rachel Kauflin shot a career-best 72 in the second round on Sunday as the Central Michigan women's golf team took a one-shot lead after day 1 of its A-Ga-Ming Invitational on the Sundance Course at A-Ga-Ming Golf Resort.
The Chippewas posted a first-round 305 team score and then followed with a 306 for a 611 total. They lead second-place Oakland (307-305 00 612) by one shot. Purdue Fort Wayne (302-320 – 622) is third.
The third and final round of the 54-hole, stroke-play tournament is scheduled for Monday at 9 a.m.
Kauflin, a sophomore from Wauwatosa, Wis., rebounded from a first-round 79 to shoot an even-par 72. Her round included three birdies and three bogeys in Sunday's second round. She stands at 151, two shots behind Veronica Haque of Oakland. Haque shot 76-73 for a 149 total.
Kauflin's previous career best 73 came last spring at the Bowling Green Dolores Black Falcon Invitational. Her 72 ties for the eighth best in program history and the Chippewas' 611 ties for the fourth best 36-hole total by a CMU squad.
CMU's Casilda Allendesalazar and Padgett Chitty are tied for third at 153, while the Chippewas' Claudia Salvador is among a group tied for eighth at 155, and Ashley Goh is tied for 15th at 159.
The Chippewas' Mackenzie Baustad and Zoe Vartyan are among the four players tied for eighth. Both are playing the event as an individual, meaning their scores don't count toward CMU's team total.
Allendesalazar, a freshman playing in her first collegiate event, opened with a 1-over 73, which tied for the second-lowest round in the tournament. She began her round with a double-bogey 6 and then made two bogeys to stand at 4-over through 11 holes. She then reeled off three consecutive birdies and then parred out to finish at 1-over.
Chitty posted an opening-round 76 and then followed with a 77, while Salvador shot 77-78. Baustad opened with a 79 and then posted a second-round 76, while Vartyan shot 77-78.
