MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. – Ohio used a 15-5 run in the opening minutes of the fourth quarter on Saturday in defeating Central Michigan, 75-65, in a Mid-American Conference women's basketball game at McGuirk Arena.
The loss dropped the Chippewas to 3-12, 1-5 MAC. The Bobcats are 8-4, 2-1.
CMU is scheduled to play at Bowling Green on Wednesday, Jan. 19 (7 p.m.). The Falcons are 6-6, 1-2 after falling, to Akron, 79-69, on Jan. 8.
"I told the team that I think that all of the extra work that they're putting in is paying off," CMU coach Heather Oesterle said. "I was very encouraged by our performance today. I thought we played much better; I thought the ball moved offensively a whole lot better than it has moved in the last couple of games."
The Chippewas shot 44.6 percent from the floor while Ohio hit 42.4. Both hit nine 3-pointers. The Chippewas had 26 attempts from long range, the Bobcats 29. CMU outrebounded OU, 41-30 while Ohio scored 23 points of CMU's 21 turnovers.
The Bobcats used a 9-2 run to seize a 28-22 halftime lead.
The Chippewas were within four, 50-46, entering the fourth quarter. Ohio outscored the Chippewas, 15-5, in the first three minutes of the frame to bump OU's lead to a game-high 14, 65-51. CMU never got closer than nine points the rest of the way.
"Our problem right now is that when teams go on runs, we can't get it stopped unless I call a timeout," Oesterle said. "That's one thing we're going to focus on a lot in practice."
Molly Davis scored 18 points to lead CMU, while freshman Tiana Timpe hit five of her 12 3-point tries to finish with 15 points. The five triples one shy of her career high.
Jahari Smith and Anika Weekes each grabbed 11 rebounds and scored nine and eight points, respectively, for CMU.
"We're not winning games, so we've got to work even harder," Oesterle said. "That might not be just physical work, mental work too … They're doing the extra stuff, they're in the weight room, getting conditioning in.
"This group could be very special once we all start clicking; I'm proud of the work they're putting in."
