MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. – Four home Mid-American Conference basketball games highlight the Central Michigan Athletics schedule this week.
The CMU men's basketball team tips off the week when it entertains Bowling Green on Tuesday and then welcomes rival Western Michigan on Thursday. The Chippewas close the week on Saturday when they, along with the Chippewa women, entertain Buffalo in a doubleheader.
• The Chippewa men enter the week 3-13, 2-3 MAC after posting 69-63 at Northern Illinois last Saturday. Bowling Green is 11-10, 4-6, and enters Tuesday game having won two straight and three of its last four; Western Michigan has lost 10 consecutive games and is 4-16, 0-9; Buffalo enters the week 10-8, 4-4, and has lost two in a row after having won five straight.
The Tuesday and Thursday games carry 7 p.m. tipoffs. On Saturday, the CMU-Buffalo women's game begins at 1 p.m. followed by the men's game at 4:30 p.m.
• The CMU women are 4-15, 2-8 after splitting their two home games last week. The Chippewas defeated Miami (Ohio), 70-59; and then dropped a 70-60 decision to Akron.
CMU is scheduled to play at Kent State on Wednesday (7 p.m.) before returning to McGuirk Arena for their date with Buffalo on Saturday. The Golden Flashes are 10-7, 2-6, and have lost two straight and three of their last four. Buffalo is 12-17 and enters the week tied for third place in the MAC at 6-3. The Bulls snapped a three-game losing streak with a 68-61 home win over Northern Illinois on Saturday.
On Friday, the CMU wrestling, gymnastics and track & field teams are in action, and the CMU women's golf team tees off on the spring portion of its schedule early next week.
• The Chippewa wrestlers, who have won eight consecutive duals to up their record to 9-2, 4-0 MAC, go to Edinboro for a MAC dual on Friday (7 p.m.) and then on Sunday they wrestle another MAC dual, at Kent State.
Edinboro is 2-7, 1-4; Kent State is 5-5, 3-2. The Chippewas are ranked 23rd in the latest InterMat Team Dual national rankings and 10th in the National Wrestling Coaches Association Mid-Major Poll. The latest InterMat Team Dual Poll is due out on Tuesday, Feb. 1; the mid-major poll is due out later this week.
Among CMU's eight consecutive dual victories are wins over Campbell and South Dakota State, both of whom were ranked, at the time, in the top 25 nationally and among the top five in the mid-major poll.
• The CMU track & field team is scheduled to split ranks and compete in two meets this weekend. On Friday, the Chippewas are slated to partake in the Snowdown Showdown at Grand Valley State and at the Notre Dame Meyo Invitational. The two-day Meyo is set to conclude on Saturday.
• The Chippewa gymnastics team is slated to compete in a nonconference quad meet on Friday (7 p.m.) at Kentucky. Georgia and Illinois round out the field. Kentucky is ranked 12th nationally, while the Illini are 26th and Georgia is 32nd. CMU is ranked 50th.
CMU is 1-2 after placing second in a nonleague tri-meet last weekend at Ball State.
