MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. – Western Michigan used a 15-0 run in the final six minutes of the second quarter to claim a lead it would never relinquish in a 58-42 victory over Central Michigan on Wednesday evening in McGuirk Arena.
The Chippewas (3-9, 1-2 MAC) are scheduled to travel to Eastern Michigan on Jan. 8 (1 p.m.). The Eagles are currently 3-5 overall and 0-1 in the conference.
"This one really hurts," CMU coach Heather Oesterle said. "I thought we were on the right track, getting better with every game we played … and this looked like the team that struggled to score at the beginning of the season."
Jahari Smith led CMU with 23 rebounds, the fourth-highest single game total in program history. She also had 10 points to tally her fifth double-double of the season.
CMU controlled the early parts of the game, leading most of the first quarter and part of the second. The Chippewas held a 22-14 lead with 6:09 on the clock when the Broncos closed the half on a 15-0 run to take a 29-22 lead into half.
The Chippewas pulled within five early in the fourth quarter but the Broncos responded with an 11-2 run to put the game away.
Molly Davis led CMU with 13 points while Lauren Ross had 25 points and 12 rebounds to lead the Broncos.
