BOWLING GREEN, Ohio -- Adam Rzentkowski had another first place finish for the Central Michigan men and the freshmen women took a big stride forward Friday to highlight the Chippewa cross country team's performances at the Bowling Green Falcon Invitational.
Rzentkowski continued his terrific junior season finishing with a time of 24:46.6 and winning the race by more than 11 seconds. He set the program 8K record two weeks ago at Lehigh and his victory on Friday was his second of the year.
The CMU men placed third with 96 points, trailing only Dayton (34) and Ohio (81). Nine teams comprised the race.
"Finishing third was awesome," CMU Director of Track & Field/Cross Country Jenny Swieton said. "I think there is more that we can do, and we have a little bit more in the tank, but we had some people step up."
Also for the CMU men, Blake Chipman placed 18th, Owen Howard was 24th, Gabe Goosen placed 25th, Clay Kuiper was 36th, Hunter Fougner was 44th, and Ethan Leitner was 45th. The race comprised 114 runners.
"We knew going to this meet we were going to be fatigued," Swieton said. "We knew it might show a little bit in the team score or the place, but that's what we needed to do to get to where we want to be for the MAC Championships.
"I think the biggest thing right now is being confident and knowing that we're a little better than we showed today. We are going to show that when it matters."
The CMU women finished fifth with 115 points, beating out MAC rivals Kent State, Ball State, and Akron. Ohio and Bowling Green placed ahead of the Chippewas, taking first and fourth, respectively.
Thirteen teams and 140 runners comprised the women's race.
Emily Paupore led the way for the Chippewas finishing in sixth place with a time of 21:38.2. Also for the Chippewas, Anya Turner placed 25th, followed by Jessie Gibbins, 32nd; Jelena Prescott, 36th; Libby Munderloh, 41st; Maija Rettelle, 45th; and Alexis Gourrier, 46th.
Gibbins and Munderloh, both of whom are freshmen, played significant roles for the CMU women. Both scored for the first time this season in a full-team event and it marked the first time Gibbins has run in a full-team event this year.
"It was great seeing them do so well," Swieton said. "They have been working hard all season. It's nice knowing that even if some of the girls have a tough race there is always someone who has their back."
The Chippewas will race in the Eastern Michigan Fall Classic in Ypsilanti on Friday, Oct. 21. It will be their last event before competing in the MAC Championships in Athens, Ohio on Oct. 29.
