AKRON, Ohio – Natalia Rejment finished with 11 kills and the Central Michigan volleyball team turned in another efficient hitting performance on Friday in topping Akron in a Mid-American Conference match at the Zips' James A. Rhodes Arena.
It was the Chippewas' fourth consecutive win, all against MAC foes and all in straight sets as they improved to 15-8, 8-4 MAC.
CMU is scheduled to play at Buffalo on Saturday (4 p.m.) in a league match. The Bulls are 14-10, 6-6 and are riding a three-match win streak.
The Chippewas trailed early in all three sets against Akron before posting the 25-18, 25-23, 25-22 victory.
Down 5-2 in the first set, CMU reeled off seven consecutive points for a 9-5 lead. Akron never got closer than three points the rest of the way.
Akron led, 17-9, in the second set when the Chippewas scored nine of the next 10 points to tie it at 18. The Zips then surged to a 22-19 advantage before CMU scored six of the final seven points to take the set and all the momentum headed into the final set.
The third set featured six ties and neither team led by more than three points. Down 13-11, CMU scored six of the next seven points to seize a 17-14 lead. The Chippewas never relinquished the lead and closed it out on a Mallory Hernandez kill followed by an Akron attack error.
Hernandez added 10 kills and Anna Erickson had nine for the Chippewas, who hit at .294 while holding the Zips to a .151 clip.
CMU has attacked at a combined .318 rate during its four-match win streak. Three of the Chippewas' top five hitting games have come during that stretch.
CMU setter Claire Ammeraal, a freshman, finished with 32 assists and Elly Medendorp finished with five of the Chippewas' 18 blocks. Aly Gurtiza and Kamryn Olson posted 14 and 12 digs, respectively.
