Walker, Caves earn first dual-meet victories; Cramer posts major-decision win
NEW ORLEANS – The Central Michigan wrestling team opened the Journeyman Collegiate Duals on Monday with two losses to extremely strong competition at the New Orleans Convention Center.
The Chippewas fell to No. 21-ranked North Carolina, 28-7, and then dropped a 50-3 decision to No. 1 Penn State, the defending national champion.
The Chippewas (0-3) are scheduled to close the tournament on Tuesday at 2 p.m. against a to-be-determined opponent.
CMU earned a combined three victories in Monday's two duals. Sophomore Bryan Caves (285 pounds) and junior Alex Cramer (174) won their respective matches against North Carolina, while freshman Anthony Walker (125) posted a win, the first of his career in a dual, against Penn State.
Cramer scored a 10-0 major-decision win over North Carolina's Cade Tenold. Cramer took a 2-0 lead with a first-period takedown and then added a four-point nearfall in the second. He finished strong with an escape in the third period and then another takedown. He also added a riding-time point.
Caves escaped to open the third period and tie his match, 1-1, with the Tar Heels' Brandon Whitman. Caves then got a takedown with 25 seconds remaining and added a riding-time point in posting a 4-1 victory, the first of his career in a dual.
Walker broke a 3-3 tie with a third-period takedown against Penn State's Gary Steen and then held on for a 5-4 victory.
North Carolina won eight matches, scoring bonus points in four of them with one technical fall and three major decisions. The Chippewas lost nine of 10 matches against Penn State, which recorded seven pins in the dual.
The North Carolina lineup in Monday's dual included six wrestlers who are ranked in the top 33 in their respective weight classes in the Intermat national rankings. Penn State's lineup also featured six ranked wrestlers, including three who are ranked No. 1 and two others who are ranked fifth.
