Cramer Leads CMU Wrestlers With 5th Place At Midlands

HOFFMAN ESTATES, Ill. – Alex Cramer placed fifth at 174 pounds on Friday in leading the Central Michigan wrestling team at the Midlands Championships at NOW Arena.
Cramer, a junior, defeated Luca Augustine of Pitt with a pin at 4:30 in the fifth-place match to finish with a 4-2 record in the prestigious, two-day tournament. Cramer, who is 14-8 on the season with two pins, was the lone Chippewa to place.
Also for the Chippewas, Corbyn Munson (157) went 3-2; Johnny Lovett (149), Chandler Amaker (165), and Cameron Wood (197) each finished 2-2; while Tracy Hubbard (165) and Bryan Caves (285) went 1-2.
Cramer opened with a 7-2 victory over Ryan Riser of Wisconsin Whitewater, and then followed with another 7-2 victory, this one over Trey Sizemore of Illinois, and a 4-0 quarterfinal win over Kole Mulhauser of Princeton.
Cramer, who was seeded fifth in the weight class, then dropped a 10-4 semifinal decision to No. 1 seed and eventual champion Edmond Ruth of Illinois and then a 12-0 major decision to Brody Conley of West Virginia. That loss landed Cramer in the fifth-place match. Ruth is ranked 10th nationally.
• Munson opened the tournament with a loss, a pin in 36 seconds, to Wisconsin's Drew Scharenbrock.
Munson, who was seeded fifth in the tournament, bounced back with three straight victories: 7-3 over Samuel McMonagle of Brown, a medical forfeit victory over Max Wilner of Arizona State, and a pin in 6:50 over Nick Vafiadis of Navy. Munson closed the tournament and finished 3-2 with a 3-2 loss to Trevor Tarsi of Harvard.
• Lovett, who was seeded eighth, opened with a 7-5 win over John Wiley of Oklahoma and then defeated Princeton's Rocco Camillaci, 4-1. Lovett then dropped a 3-1 decision to Arizona State's Kyle Parco and then was eliminated by Cade Balestrini of Bloomsburg, 3-2. Parco was seeded No. 1 in the tournament and ranked fifth nationally. Lovett is ranked 29th nationally.
• Amaker opened with a 12-3 major-decision loss to Cardi Wilson of SIU Edwardsville and was eliminated on a 2-1 decision by Northwestern's Max Mayfield. In between, Amaker posted a 5-4 win over Tony Negron of Arizona State and then a 7-3 victory over Tyler Lillard of Indiana.
• Wood opened with a 9-6 win over Tommy Hagan of Missouri and then fell on a pin at 5:17 to Luke Stout of Pitt. Wood then defeated CMU teammate Cade Dallwitz, 3-2, before bowing on a 15-4 major decision to Andrew Davison of Northwestern.
• Hubbard opened with a 10-4 loss to Holden Heller of Pitt and then scored a 3-1 SV-1 victory over Drew Dickson of George Mason Hubbard then bowed to Nathan Lackman, 10-5, of Rhode Island College.
• Caves defeated Jake Slinger of Pitt, 5-2, in his opening bout before falling, 4-0, to Colton McKiernan of SIU Edwardsville and to Aydin Guttridge of North Carolina, 13-6.
