Annual award goes to nation's top amateur baseball player
MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. – Central Michigan pitcher Andrew Taylor has been named to the Golden Spikes Award Preseason Watch List.
Taylor, a 6-foot-5, 190-pound sophomore right-hander from Alto, is one of 55 players on the list. The award goes annually to the nation's top amateur baseball player. Taylor is the lone representative from a Mid-American Conference school.
It is the latest in a slew of individual honors bestowed upon Taylor, who was nothing short of phenomenal in 2021, leading CMU to a second straight MAC regular-season championship and NCAA Tournament berth.
He posted an 11-4 record with a 1.81 earned run average, striking out 125 while walking 24 over 94 1/3 innings. He tossed two shutouts and five complete games and held opposing hitters to a .189 batting average.
He earned All-America honors from the American Baseball Coaches Association, D1 Baseball, Baseball America, Collegiate Baseball Newspaper and the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association.
He was named the MAC Pitcher of the Year and the MAC Freshman Pitcher of the Year and earned a spot on the all-conference first team.
The Chippewas are set to open the season this weekend with three games in Conway, S.C. They open on Friday (11 a.m.) against West Virginia.
