WBB Falls At Akron

AKRON, Ohio -- Akron outscored Central Michigan, 22-8, in the third quarter on Wednesday in defeating the Chippewas, 67-54, in a Mid-American Conference women's basketball game at the Zips' James A. Rhodes Arena.
The Chippewas are 4-20, 2-13 MAC. The Zips are 12-8, 9-5.
CMU is scheduled to host Eastern Michigan (6-16, 3-12) on Saturday, Feb. 19 (1 p.m.) at McGuirk Arena. The Eagles picked up a 70-61 home win over Miami (Ohio) on Wednesday.
The Chippewas led, 20-13, in the first quarter, and extended their lead to 13, 26-13, with just over six minutes to play in the half. Akron sliced its deficit to just three, 32-29, at halftime as the Zips went on a 14-0 second-quarter run.
The Zips scored the first 13 points of the third quarter in building a 42-32 lead. The Chippewas managed to get within six, 44-38, but the Zips answered with a 7-0 spurt to restore their lead to 13, 51-38. CMU never got its deficit under double digits the rest of the way.
The Chippewas made just 23.3 percent of their second-half field goal attempts, including a 2-for-13 clip from 3-point range. Akron outscored the Chippewas, 38-22, over the final two quarters.
Jahari Smith made eight of her 13 shot attempts from the floor to lead CMU with 18 points and 11 rebounds for her second consecutive double-double and her 10th of the season. Lisa Tesson added 11 points and five rebounds. Molly Davis finished with nine points, all of which came in the first half.
