MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. – The Central Michigan lacrosse team got out to a fast start in rolling past Kent State, 20-6, in a Mid-American Conference game on Thursday at the CMU Soccer/Lacrosse Complex.
The Chippewas won for the fourth time in their last five starts, improving to 4-3, 2-0 MAC. They led 9-1 after one quarter and then extended it to 12-1 early in the second.
The 20 goals ties for the fourth most in a game in the seven-year history of the program. The Chippewas finished with 43 shots including 27 on goal. The 43 shots tie for the second most in a game and the 27 on goal ties for 10th.
"We have multiple goal scorers," CMU coach Sara Tisdale said. "I think we're talented through and through, but overall, it's hard to figure out who's going to have a day."
Kendall Hoyt and Hannah Potter both had four goals to lead the Chippewas. Maggie Diebold scored three goals, while Audrey Whiteside found the back of the net twice. Freshmen Taylor Roth and Hanna Wegner both scored their first collegiate goals.
Nine Chippewas scored in the game. CMU is averaging 17 goals per game in its last five starts and has outscored its two MAC opponents by a combined 38-12.
"I think it's a maturity piece," Tisdale said. "It doesn't matter who you're playing, you continue to play the same way every time. That's the big difference for us as you see now in year seven (of the program). We're here."
CMU goalkeeper Erin Owens made two saves, improving to 4-3. Central Michigan is 4-0 against Kent State all time.
CMU continues MAC play with a road trip, first traveling to Robert Morris to face off against the defending MAC champion on Wednesday, March 16 (1 p.m.) and then to Cincinnati for a nonleague game on Friday, March 18 (1 p.m.).
