Lacrosse Drops Heartbreaker At Robert Morris
3/16/2022 4:55:00 PM | Lacrosse
MOON TOWNSHIP, Pa. -- Central Michigan lacrosse dropped a nail-biter to Robert Morris on Wednesday in a big Mid-American Conference game at the Colonials' Joe Walton Stadium.
Â
It was CMU's first conference loss of the season after a 2-0 start. The Chippewas, 4-4, sit 1 ½ games behind Robert Morris, 4-4, 3-0, in the MAC standings.
Â
CMU led, 9-7, at halftime but was outscored, 6-0, in the third quarter. The Chippewas tied the game, 14-14, but the Colonials went on a three-goal spurt for a 17-14 lead with 1:18 left. Audrey Whiteside scored twice in the final 1:14 to pull CMU within a goal.
Â
"Their defense got pretty aggressive," said CMU coach Sara Tisdale about the third quarter. "(Robert Morris) started to come out and play outside a little bit more and we didn't take advantage of our opportunities. We should have been prepared for that."
Â
"We started out strong. I think you saw some of our indecision really get the best of us."
Â
Central Michigan is 0-5 all time against Robert Morris, dating to 2016. The Colonials defeated the Chippewas twice last season en route to the MAC championship.
Â
"You know what's on the line every single time you play (Robert Morris)," Tisdale said. "They're well coached; I've got a lot of respect for them. I happen to think that this year we have a really good team, we've just got to show up."
Â
The Colonials had 33 shots on goal in comparison to the Chippewas' 29. Both teams recorded 42 total shots.
Â
Kelly Hoyt led the way with five goals for CMU, her career high. Audrey Whiteside recorded four goals and a career-high four assists, Courtney Burke added four goals, and CMU goalkeeper made 16 saves.
Â
The Chippewas are scheduled to play at Cincinnati on Friday (1 p.m.) before returning home to entertain Akron in a MAC game on Wednesday, March 23 (2 p.m.).
