Solid Performance For Lacrosse Against No. 8 Michigan

MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. – A good measure for any team in any sport is how it performs against the best.
By any measure, the Central Michigan lacrosse team showed on Sunday that it has come a ways since its season opener.
The Chippewas went on a five-goal fourth-quarter spurt to make a game of it before succumbing to eighth-ranked Michigan, 17-13, in a nonconference game at the CMU Lacrosse Complex.
The loss ended CMU's win streak at three games, but in the grand scheme of things, it was an indication of the strides the Chippewas have made since a season-opening 24-5 loss at No. 5 Notre Dame.
"From Notre Dame to today, they've had to dig deep and really buy into what we have," CMU coach Sara Tisdale said. "Had they played that first quarter like they played the second half this would have been a very, very competitive game; even more so than it was."
The Chippewas (3-3) trailed 11-5 at halftime and were down 16-7 after three quarters. CMU scored five consecutive goals over a seven-plus minute span of the final stanza to draw to 16-12.
CMU outscored the Wolverines (7-0), 8-6, in the second half and finished with a 33-32 edge in shots, including 19-11 in the second half.
"It was just them buying in and believing what they have is good enough," Tisdale said. "It's all mental and they did a really nice job of turning it around and finding that momentum. I told them at halftime that the difference in this game right now is a couple of ground balls. We were just getting outhustled in the first half and that's what it came down to.
"Here's what (we're) all about: the opponent shouldn't matter and that's what we talked about in the locker room. If we play to our potential, it doesn't matter who's on the other side."
Audrey Whiteside and Maggie Diebold scored four goals apiece to lead the Chippewas (3-3). Courtney Burke added two goals and Whiteside finished with three assists.
Erin Owens made eight saves in goal for the Chippewas.
Central Michigan returns to Mid-American Conference play at home on Thursday, March 10 (3 p.m.) against Kent state and then goes to defending league champion Robert Morris a week later.
The Chippewas are 1-0 in league play after downing Detroit Mercy, 18-6, in their conference opener last week.
"If this team right here, with this confidence, shows up on Thursday, I don't think we'll be losing again for a long time," Tisdale said.
