KALAMAZOO, Mich. – Grace Lehto struck out four and the Chippewas got big hits from unlikely sources on Saturday as Central Michigan downed Western Michigan, 3-1, in the opener of a Mid-American Conference doubleheader at the Broncos' Ebert Field.
Western rebounded to win the nightcap, 5-0, as Reily Galloway threw a perfect game, striking out 10.
The Chippewas are 21-20, 12-7 MAC. Western is 17-28, 7-12. The teams are scheduled to close the series on Sunday (11 a.m.).
Lehto (12-9) allowed six hits and walked two in tossing her third consecutive complete game victory and improving to 5-1 in her last six decisions. She worked out of a two-on, one-out jam in the fourth, and a two-on, two-out jam in the fifth.
The Broncos' run came on a sixth-inning home run.
The Chippewas scored a run in the third when Abbey Tolmie singled, stole second, took third on an infield hit, and scored on a wild pitch.
CMU added two runs in the third when Kelsey Alexander led off with a single, moved to second on a bunt, and scored on a Samantha Mills double. Maddie Springer followed with a single to score Mills to make it 3-0. Mills and Springer are the Nos. 8 and 9 hitters, respectively, in the Chippewa lineup.
