MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. – A special trip to Michigan's crowning jewel is on tap for the Central Michigan volleyball team when it travels to Mackinac Island on Saturday, Aug. 20 for an exhibition match with Northern Michigan.
"We have had the idea of getting our athletes to Mackinac Island for a few years," CMU coach Mike Gawlik said. "The opportunity to not only visit the Island, but play an NCAA volleyball match there, is really special for our athletes and their families.
"Not only will we be able to test ourselves against Northern Michigan, but it will also provide a first-class experience for our program. We are excited that our administrations, as well as the Mackinac Island Public Schools, shared in that vision of bringing elite women's athletics to a unique venue on the 50th anniversary of Title IX."
The match with the Wildcats on Mackinac Island is part of CMU's first weekend of competition. The Chippewas' annual Maroon-Gold scrimmage is set for Friday, Aug. 19.
CMU opens the season on Aug. 26-27 with a tournament at Memphis. It is the first of four weekend tournaments for the Chippewas. They are also slated to go to Saint Louis (Sept. 2-3), to North Dakota State (Sept. 9-10) and to Butler (Sept. 16-17).
In addition to the host Bulldogs, CMU is scheduled to play Notre Dame and Missouri at the Butler Tournament.
The Chippewas' home and Mid-American Conference-opening weekend is scheduled for Sept. 23-24 when they entertain Ball State. CMU is also slated to entertain Ohio, Kent State, Eastern Michigan, Miami (Ohio) and Western Michigan in MAC matches.
The Chippewas are scheduled to play league matches at Toledo, Bowling Green, Akron, Buffalo, Northern Illinois and Eastern Michigan.
