Two CMU Volleyball Players Earn Weekly MAC Honors

MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. – Two Central Michigan volleyball players were honored by the Mid-American Conference on Tuesday for their respective performances as the Chippewas finished 2-1 in the season-opening Memphis Tiger Brawl.

CMU's Mallory Hernandez was named the MAC West Offensive Player of the Week, while teammate Aly Gurtiza earned the MAC West Defensive Player of the Week.

Hernandez, a senior outside hitter who transferred to CMU from Georgia, made her first weekend of competition in a Chippewa uniform a memorable one, finishing with 55 kills on a .398 hitting percentage and earning a spot on the all-tournament team.

Gurtiza, a sophomore libero from Greenwood, Mo., totaled 67 digs, an average of 5.15 per set, in the tournament. She finished with 27 digs in CMU's five-set victory over Memphis. She finished the weekend with a .946 reception percentage and was perfect with 12-for-12 in receptions in CMU's five-set loss to Nicholls in the tournament finale.
