KALAMAZOO, Mich. -- Central Michigan Volleyball fell in game two of its series against Western Michigan on Friday in straight sets.
Â
Statistically, the Chippewas competed closely with the Broncos. CMU had an edge over WMU in kills, blocks and assists while matching in digs. However, the Chippewas trailed in hitting percentage, posting a mark of .226 to the Broncos' .248.
Â
To kick off the first set, CMU immediately fell into a 0-4 hole. Managing to dig itself back out, the score was evened up at 11.Â
Â
The Chippewas welcomed junior opposite Krystina Kasson back to the lineup, who had previously been out with an injury. Kasson - a Kalamazoo native - made her presence felt immediately by registering four kills in set one and leading the team in kills on the night with 11.
Â
During her absence, fellow junior opposite Linnea Willer had stepped up and produced well. On Friday, both players contributed with a combined 17 kills.Â
Â
The results of set two were a bit deceiving. Despite falling 25-20, CMU bested Western in kills (14 to 13) and hitting percentage (.400 to .290) while committing fewer errors. However, following a 4-0 WMU run to bring the score to 21-17 in favor of the Broncos, the Chippewas couldn't quite overcome the difference.
Â
Behind Kasson, redshirt sophomore middle blocker Abby Olin and sophomore outside Maddy Gebhardt posted seven kills apiece. Gebhardt also tied for the team lead in blocks with three, along with senior middle blocker Austyn DeWeese. CMU had players register double figures assists with sophomore setters Claire Ammeraal (23) and Allie Korba (14), as well as digs with Gebhardt (15) and junior libero Aly Gurtiza (12).
Â
Despite trailing for much of the match, CMU kept battling throughout set three. A timely kill by Olin put the Chippewas down just 21-22. The ensuing point went to Western, then Olin once again registered a kill to give them a 22-23 score. But the Broncos didn't waver and scored the next two points to shut the door.
Â
Having played its last four games away, CMU returns home for its next four games, starting with a two-game series against Northern Illinois. The Chippewas will take on the Huskies next Friday (Oct. 20) at 6 p.m. ET at McGuirk Arena.
