Soccer Fights to Scoreless Draw with Akron

Another fine 90 minutes in goal for Allison LaPoint but a stiff second-half headwind leads to scoreless outcome with the Zips
MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. — Central Michigan Soccer collected another point toward the Mid-American Conference standings Sunday afternoon in a scoreless outing with Akron at the CMU Soccer Complex.
Â
The Chippewas (2-5-6, 1-4-3 MAC) leaned on their reliable keeper as Allison LaPoint (Royal Oak, Mich. / Shrine Catholic) put up another six saves, right in line with her league-leading average of 5.42 after Sunday's action. Five of her six stops came in the second half as the Zips (2-12-1, 0-7-1 MAC) with the benefit of a strong tailwind.
Â
"It was great to get a clean sheet today," Head Coach Jeremy Groves said.
Â
CMU was selective with its shots offensively as it led 2-1 in on-frame attempts through the first half despite taking just three total shots to Akron's eight, both of which were taken by Jocelin Zimmerer (Evergreen, Colo. / Evergreen) from the left side of the goal just outside the penalty area.
Â
"I thought we had good spells in the game today. We created some good chances but lacked that killer instinct. We have to be more clinical in front of goal."
Â
LaPoint's most crucial stop of the day came just after intermission as the Chippewas ceded a free kick from just over 20 yards out in the 48th minute, collecting a head-on strike from the Zips' Jordanne Oberhaus with rushers coming at both posts.
Â
Central Michigan Soccer heads to Bowling Green, Ohio Thursday for the final night kickoff (Oct. 19, 7 p.m.) of the 2023 regular season. The Chippewas return next Sunday (Oct. 22, 1 p.m.) to host Northern Illinois with the regular season finale set to take place at Ball State the following Thursday (Oct. 26, 3 p.m.).
