Central Michigan outgained Northern Illinois across the board statistically, came up empty in 2023’s final home game
MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. — Central Michigan Soccer fell in Mid-American Conference play, 1-0, against Northern Illinois to conclude the 2023 regular season home schedule.
Â
Graduate midfielder Claudia Muessig (Paw Paw, Mich. / Paw Paw)—formerly a member of the NIU program—brought a fierce charge for the Chippewas (2-7-6, 1-6-3 MAC) with two of the team's six on-frame attempts along with multiple well-executed set pieces as CMU out-produced the Huskies (8-6-3, 6-3-1 MAC) in shots (22-17) and corners (6-3) while matching the MAC-tournament contenders with six shots on-goal.
Â
Tied with Muessig in on-frame attempts, Myla Stewart (Evergreen, Colo. / Evergreen) posted nearly her entire 17-minute stat line in a two-minute window, likely the strongest scoring chance in the first half, as she twice bullied her way into the six-yard box to mark three shots in total, two on-frame.
Â
Muessig's play hit its apex in the 87' with a looping attempt just inside the right corner of the 18', poised to evade the Huskies' keeper for the back post until a NIU backline field player scooped the attempt out, sending the ball back into play off the crossbar.
Â
Central Michigan Soccer will visit Ball State Thursday for a 3 p.m. kickoff in Muncie, Ind., the final contest of the 2023 season.
