Volleyball Falls Short in Valiant Effort Against Buffalo

BUFFALO, N.Y. -- Embarking on its longest road trip in its conference schedule, Central Michigan volleyball traveled to Buffalo on Thursday, fighting hard but ultimately dropping the first of their two games on the road trip, to the Bulls in five sets.
Â
The Chippewas started off the match strong, winning set one 25-22 before falling in set two 25-22 and set three 25-23. CMU rallied to win set four 25-21 and send it to the fifth set, but fell short by a score of 15-11.
Â
It was a pretty clean day for the Chippewas, with 19 errors to Buffalo's 27. However, CMU's offensive attack had a hard time keeping pace with the Bulls' at times; Buffalo registered 69 kills on the night to CMU's 52.
Â
The Chippewas took advantage of the sloppy play of Buffalo in set one. Ten of CMU's 25 points came courtesy of service, attack error and ball handling errors. Otherwise, leading the Chippewas in the first set offensively was junior opposite Linnea Willer with four kills.
Â
Willer led CMU with a career-high 19 kills in the match on .471 hitting percentage. She also registered a career-high mark in digs with six. Junior libero Aly Gurtiza led the Chippewas in digs with 22, and sophomore setter Claire Ammeraal posted 45 assists.
Â
CMU hit .228 on the night, but that number was sunk by set three where they hit .053 - barely edged out by Buffalo's .087 set three percentage. Outside of that third set, the Chippewas did not hit below .250 in any others.Â
Â
Set four was CMU's best, during which the Chippewas hit .345 and committed just two errors. They got seven points between Willer and redshirt sophomore middle blocker Abby Olin, along with a pair of service aces from Ammeraal and sophomore outside Maddy Gebhardt.
Â
In the final set, CMU kept pace with the Bulls for a majority of the way. However, after it came within one point of Buffalo at 10-11, the Bulls three point run before closing the door on the Chippewas.Â
Â
CMU will return to action on Friday (Oct. 6) in Akron to take on the Zips. The match is scheduled for 6 p.m. ET.
