MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. --Â Central Michigan Athletics recently hosted a career fair for student-athletes in the atrium of the Kulhavi Events Center in coordination with CMU's Career Development Center.
Â
Assistant Athletic Director of Student Athlete Leadership and Development Travis Downing led the effort in reintroducing the event after a hiatus.
Â
"It was an event that we did a little bit prior to the pandemic and brought it back for the first time this year since then," Downing said. "I thought it was very successful. We had 27 organizations and right around 125 student-athletes attend."
Â
The focus of the event was on junior and senior student-athletes who are preparing to graduate.
Â
Additionally, CMU Athletics wanted to ensure a wide range of industries represented, Downing said.
Â
"We wanted to help them realize what career options are out there," he said. "We also wanted to help connect them with corporate partners and potential employers.
Â
"It was important that many industries would be represented for student-athletes, whether that's business, health and medicine. We have some students in statistics as well. We really wanted to focus on having a well-rounded group of employers there, so that our student-athletes had someone that they could see themselves working for in the future."
Â
The career fair served as a networking opportunity for CMU student-athletes, allowing them to make connections and develop the skills necessary to do so in future employment.
Â
Though the event had been held in past years, this year was the first in collaboration with the Career Development Center.
Â
"This was our first time working with the Career Center on campus," Downing said. "So they were a big partner of ours and really helped make it happen. They did a lot of our employer relations and employer recruiting to make sure that we were well represented and had a plethora of organizations in attendance."
