McDowell earns the CSVA MAC Video Coordinator of the Year Award for the fourth consecutive year at Central Michigan.
MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. – For the fourth consecutive year, Central Michigan's Jay McDowell was honored as the Mid-American Conference Video Coordinator of the Year by the Collegiate Sports Video Association. McDowell has now won the award seven times in his career, including five times at Central Michigan.
"I am extremely grateful to receive this award," said McDowell, who begins his 13th year at CMU and his 31st year as a football video coordinator. "It is my honor to represent Central Michigan, the Mid-American Conference, and my fellow MACtion video brethren."
"I would not be in a situation to win the award if not for the love and support from my family, friends, and the CMU Family. In addition, I want to thank all the student workers that come in every day and give this program everything they have with a smile on their faces regardless of what the day brings. This honor belongs to them way more than it belongs to me."
Last year, McDowell earned the award after overcoming a life-threatening struggle with COVID. He was released from the hospital in February, 2021 after 81 days and is still recovering to this day.
"When I was in the hospital, I was amazed at the outpouring of support and how many people called to check in and find out how I was doing," McDowell said.
A native of Louisiana, McDowell is affectionately known as "Jay Mac" by those in and around the Chippewa football program.
For the fourth straight year, McDowell is eligible for the prestigious Bob Matey National Video Coordinator of the Year Award. The Bob Matey award is presented to the Video Coordinator who displays innovation, determination, perseverance and technical skill as portrayed by the late Bob Matey, legendary Video Coordinator from Texas A&M. The award will be announced in May at the Collegiate Sports Video Association's annual banquet in Baltimore, Md.
McDowell, 49, oversees all of the football program's information technology including its state-of-the-art video analysis system, the XOS game exchange system, nearly a dozen student workers, the maintenance of the recruiting video database, manages the Chippewas' iPad video and playbook system, coordinates the filming of all practices and games, the production of highlight films and graphics.
Prior to his current position, McDowell served as Director of Video Operations and Assistant Athletic Director for Sports Technology at the University of Southern Mississippi for five years. He was also Director of Video Operations at the University of Louisiana-Monroe for five years. His experience includes positions at Colorado and McNeese State as well.
McDowell earned his bachelor's degree in mass communication/media studies from McNeese State University in 1996. He and his wife, Misty, have a son, Dakota Jay, and a daughter, Mia Isabel.
