Two CMU Wrestlers Earn Top Seeds for MAC Championships

MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. – Two Central Michigan wrestlers are seeded No. 1 for the Mid-American Conference Championships, which begin on Friday at George Mason's EagleBank Arena in Fairfax, Va.
Corbyn Munson (157 pounds) and Alex Cramer (174) are the Chippewas who have earned No. 1 seeds for the two-day tournament, which not only determines the best in the MAC, but which wrestlers will earn coveted spots in the NCAA Championships, which are scheduled for March 16-18 in Tulsa, Okla.
Seven other Chippewas are seeded for the MAC Championships. Three – Johnny Lovett (149), Tracy Hubbard (165) and Bryan Caves (285) – are seeded fifth, which Sean Spidle (125) is seeded sixth.
The Chippewas' Vince Perez (133) is seeded seventh, while Jimmy Nugent (141) and Ben Cushman (184) are both seeded eighth.
The MAC seeds the top eight in each weight class. Only at 197 (Cameron Wood) is a CMU wrestler unseeded.
The tournament brackets are scheduled to be released Thursday night.
The No. 1 seed in each of the other weight classes: 125, Anthony Noto, Lock Haven; 133, Gable Strickland, Lock Haven; 141, McKenzie Bell, Rider; 149, Caleb Tyus, SIUE; 165, Izzak Olejnik, Northern Illinois; 184, Will Feldkamp, Clarion; 197, Ethan Laird, Rider; 285, Colton McKiernan, SIUE.
The MAC was allotted 22 automatic bids to the NCAA Championships.
The weight-class breakdown of those allotments: 125, 2; 133, 1; 141, 2; 149, 5; 157, 4; 165, 1; 174, 4; 184, 2; 197, 1; 285, 1.
A wrestler may also receive an at-large bid to the NCAA Championships if he does not earn one of the automatic qualifying spots at his weight class. The at-large bids are announced in the week after the championship tournaments are finished in each of the seven Division I conferences.
