MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – In the opening day of the Gopher Indoor Classic, the Central Michigan softball team earned a split with a 4-0 win over St. Thomas and a 1-3 loss to Drake. The Chippewas move to 9-10 on the season.
In the morning victory, the Chippewas were led in the circle by junior pitcher Grace Lehto. Lehto, coming off of a 15-strikeout performance against Army, continued to perform at a high level as she struck out eight batters in the win, moving her record to 3-4 on the season and marking her third complete game.
Offensively, Central Michigan was highlighted by a three-hit performance by sophomore Allyssa Hollo. Hollo recorded one RBI in the game as well. In the bottom half of the first inning, Hollo singled and scored Alexander, who reached when she singled to the third baseman. The run in the first was the only run in the game until the fifth inning.
In the fifth, Abbey Tolmie reached on a four-pitch walk, and was driven home when Skylar Coberley singled to the third baseman. Vallimont, who reached on a base hit to left field, scored on a Cronin single to first base to give the Chippewa a 3-0 lead. The final run of the ball game came when Maddie Springer hit a sacrifice fly to left field and Coberley tapped home.
For the nightcap, Kaitlyn Bean took the loss and drops her record to 2-3 on the season. Bean pitched five innings, then was relieved by Madelyn Wallace. Wallace recorded the final six outs after entering with the bases loaded and nobody out.
The Chippewas had only two hits in the game, credited to Michaleigh Vallimont and Kelsey Alexander. Alexander doubled in the first inning and Vallimont singled in the sixth inning.
Central Michigan scored its lone run of the game when Tolmie crossed home in the bottom of the sixth. Tolmie reached on an error and was advanced to third on the Vallimont hit. Tailynn Knapp, who entered as a pinch runner, got herself into a pickle stealing second which allowed Tolmie to get home.
Next, the Chippewas will play Idaho State and Minnesota on Saturday, March 11th. The games are slated to be played back to back with the Idaho State game starting at 3 p.m. (ET).
