Chippewas win fourth straight game, improve to an undefeated 4-0 in Mid-American Conference play.
DETROIT, Mich. – The Central Michigan Lacrosse team remained undefeated in Mid-American Conference play as it defeated Detroit Mercy 20-8 on Saturday in Detroit. This victory marks the second time this year that the Chippewas have defeated the Titans. Riding a four-game win streak, Central Michigan moves to 6-6 overall and 4-0 in the MAC, while Detroit falls to 3-8 overall and 2-3 in the MAC.
Offensively, the Chippewas were led by Sadie Hinkle and Kelly Hoyt who each scored four goals. Kendall Hoyt and Maggie Diebold each had three goals, two apiece for Skye Deprado and Amanda Hilderbrandt, and Makenna Huhn and Celia Dow each added one. Reagan led the Chippewas with a career-high three assists.
This marks the third consecutive hat trick for Kelly on the year and her fifth of the season. This is the second game in Hinkle's career where she registered a hat trick, the other coming on April 5th when the Chippewas defeated Eastern Michigan 17-11. Hinkle has scored in all but two games for the Chippewas this season.
Alexa Martel played all 60 minutes in goal for the Chippewas, where she recorded eight saves, bringing her season total to 101. She now ranks No. 4 in saves in the CMU Lacrosse record book.
Detroit Mercy took an early 1-0 lead, but Central Michigan quickly responded and never trailed again. Hinkle started the scoring for the Chippewas at the 11:58 mark in the first quarter and opened the flood gates for a 7-0 Chippewas run for through the remainder of the first quarter.
First year Central Michigan Head Coach Emilia Ward thinks that Hinkle's ability to score the ball for the Chippewas is huge.
"Sadie plays down on the crease, which gives us a great driving option at a different level of our offense," Ward said. "She is really confident in what she needs to do because she does the work off of the field. For a kid who didn't really play at all last year during her freshman year and to come in and contribute in a big way in every game this season, especially with our strength of schedule early on, that is huge for her and for our team. Now that conference play has started, she is just beaming with confidence and owning it."
In the second quarter, Maggie Diebold started things 30 seconds in when she scored from a free position shot. Detroit Mercy scored four goals in the second quarter, the most they would score in any quarter of the game. The second quarter is also where Kelly Hoyt got her scoring started for the night. Hoyt found the back of the net at the 6:30 mark and scored three more times after that. Not only did Hoyt have a great night attacking the net, but she also put on a draw control clinic for the second game in a row.
"Kelly just goes super hard, all the time," Ward said. "She is great finisher, obviously and I think the draw circle now is really starting to grow her confidence. I think she may have had a bit of a shaky start there in the non-conference, but to see her get that confidence back here in these last couple of games has been huge."
The Chippewas have relied on their goalies this season, heavily. That is great when you have strong goal tenders, but Coach Ward challenged her defense to step it up coming into the game in Detroit, and she believes they delivered.
"When we played Detroit at home earlier this year, it was a game where we felt like we put them on the 8-meter a lot more than we needed to and fouled them too much," Ward said. "In the game tonight, outside of a few fouls here and there, we really cleaned that aspect of the game up, which is great because it gave Alexa a better chance to see the shots coming at her."
The Chippewas head into their final stretch of the regular season as they face Youngstown State, Kent State and Robert Morris in three of their final four games; the other three teams who advanced to the MAC Tournament last season.
Ward is excited for that challenge moving forward.
"For us, we have to clean up some details and focus on playing a full 60 minutes," Ward said. "Tonight was a good step in that direction, but we still had some things we are looking to build on because those are things that Youngstown and Kent will take full advantage of. We are excited to get home and play a good home contest against Youngstown State."
That game against Youngstown State will take place on Wednesday, April 19 at the CMU Lacrosse Complex. First draw is slated for 1 p.m.
