Lacrosse Cruises Past Penguins for Fifth Straight Victory

MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. – The Central Michigan Lacrosse team cruised to another victory in Mid-American Conference play, continuing their undefeated streak. The record for the Chippewas advances to 7-6 overall and 5-0 in the MAC. CMU defeated Youngstown State 15-8 which moves the Penguins to 5-10 overall and 3-3 in the MAC.
The Chippewas were led by sophomore Skye Deprado who scored a career high four goal in the outing. Maggie Diebold also recorded a hat trick, her eighth of the 2023 season and 19th in her CMU career.
Audrey Whiteside added two goals along with Kelly Hoyt and Kendall Hoyt. Sadie Hinkle continued her hot streak and scored for the eighth straight game while Makenna Huhn scored her tenth goal of the season.
Sophomore goalie Alexa Martel collected her 6th win of the season, with 11 saves on the day.
Here is how it happened:
Diebold started the scoring for the Chippewas in the first quarter when she dropped one in at the 11:03 mark, her 34th of the season. Whiteside assisted Kendall Hoyt on a goal to bring the lead to 2-0 Chippewas.
Youngstown State then evened the score at 2-2 when CMU called a timeout. From that point, the Chippewas went on a 5-0 run. Hinkle scored on a free position shot; Kendall Hoyt grabbed her second on the day for a 4-2 lead at the end of the first.
In the second quarter, Whiteside scored just over a minute in and then again, a minute later for her two goals on the day. Deprado started to heat up at the 9:38 mark in the second when she made the score 7-2, Chippewas.
Deprado scored again in the second to end the half at 8-4 in favor of CMU.
In the third, Huhn started the scoring on an unassisted goal, then Diebold again at the 5:43 mark on a free position shot. Deprado grabbed goal number three on the day in the third at the 2:50 mark then again on a goal assisted by Reagan Martinsen. Kelly Hoyt closed the third quarter out on a give-and-go from Diebold, 13-6 Chippewas.
In the fourth, Diebold completed her hat trick at the 8:12 mark in the fourth. The final goal for the Chippewas was scored by Kelly Hoyt with an assist to Hinkle.
What's Next:
On Saturday, April 22, the lacrosse team will head to Kent State where they face the Golden Flashes. Kent State is currently ranked third in the MAC under Robert Morris in second and the Chippewas in first.
The game is slated to start at 1 p.m. in Kent, Ohio.
