Cape Girardeau, Mo. – The Central Michigan Volleyball team closed out the SEMO Invitational with a 3-2, hard fought, loss to Evansville. The Chippewas will head back to Mount Pleasant and host the Chippewa Invitational, September 1st and 2nd in McGuirk Arena.
The Chippewas were victorious in sets two and three against the Aces, after dropping the first, and the final two to ultimately drop the match.
In the first game, the Chippewas lost 17-25 to the Aces. Junior outside hitter, Linnea Willer, led the team with three kills, sophomore setter Claire Ammeraal had 7 assists and Devon Bright dug four balls.
For the next two sets, it wasn't "all Chippewas" but the Maroon & Gold pulled away with two victories (26-24 and 25-20). Bright started to heat up in set two, scoring four points in the set and Aly Gurtiza dug four balls. Set three was led offensively led by Ammeraal who scored five points, assisted on nine others, and hit .444.
Sets three and four belonged to the Aces but were ones filled with back-and-forth action. Set four had three lead changes, eight total service aces and was tied 11 times. The fifth set, sat at match point for four points, that went the Chippewas' way before Evansville ultimately closed the door.
Central Michigan will face Albany (12:30 p.m.) and Saint Louis (7:30 p.m.) on Friday, September 1st when they return to action in McGuirk Arena for the Chippewa Invitational.
