KEWADIN, Mich. – All in all, not a bad start to the 2023-24 women's golf season for Central Michigan.
Seniors Ashley Goh shot 78-71 – 149 and Rachel Kauflin shot 74-77 – 151 on Sunday to lead the Chippewas on the opening day of the CMU-hosted A-Ga-Ming Invitational at A-Ga-Ming Golf Resort.
The third and final round of the 54-hole stroke-play event is scheduled for 9 a.m. Monday.
The Chippewas opened with a 306 team score on Sunday morning and then followed with a 309 for a 615 total. They are in eighth place in the 13-team field, just two shots behind seventh-place Ohio (311-302 – 613).
Abilene Christian shot a 5-under 571 (289-282) and leads the tournament by 13 shots over second-place Oakland, the defending champion. The Golden Grizzlies shot 584 (290-294) on Sunday.
Goh is tied for 13th in the 80-player field, while Kauflin is tied for 20th.
"Overall I think today was a good starting point for us," second-year CMU coach Ryan Williams said. "I think we had some really solid performances, we learned a lot, and got a lot of great experience for our younger kids.
"We have a group that is eager to learn and grow and they want to continue to get better. We're looking to make steps every day that we get to the golf course."
The Chippewa lineup featured two freshmen, Rachel Niskanen and Evanka Shah, playing in their first collegiate event. Another freshman, Lexi Schulman, is also playing in her first college tournament, as an individual.
Niskanen opened with a 4-over 76 on Sunday and followed with an 81 for a 157 total. She is tied for 41st. CMU senior Mackenzie Baustad shot 78-80 – 158 and is tied for 47th.
"Our seniors did a great job of leading us today," Williams said. "It's great to see some really solid performances and good rounds out of all of them and they're finding their stride back on campus and with the team."
Jiyu Han of Abilene Christian and Bridget Boczar of Oakland are tied for first place at 5-under. Han opened with an even-par 72 and then posted a 5-under 67 in her afternoon loop. Boczar shot a blistering 7-under 65 in the morning and then came in at 2-over 74 in the afternoon.
They lead by four shots over Abilene Christian's Sydney Williams (71-72 – 143).
