Chippewas post solid 294 in Monday's final round to leap three spots in 13-team tournament
KEWADIN, Mich. – Improvement at almost every turn.
As a result, a very solid finish for the Central Michigan women's golf team at the 3rd Annual A-Ga-Ming Invitational at A-Ga-Ming Golf Resort.
Ashley Goh posted her second-straight 1-under 71 to finish in a tie for seventh place on Monday as the host Chippewas finished in fifth place in the 13-team field.
CMU entered the day in eighth place and then, led by Goh, turned in a 294 team total – 15 shots better than their second-round 309 – to finish at 909.
They opened the 54-hole event on Sunday with a first-round 306. CMU's 15-shot improvement from round two to round three was the best in the field.
"Very excited about the way we played today," second-year CMU coach Ryan Williams said. "We had talked about learning lessons from yesterday, cleaning up some stuff, making fewer big numbers and capitalizing on opportunities. Across the board, we did that.
"Really excited to see some young kids have some success and they should be ready to take some confidence from this and continue through the season."
Abilene Christian shot 290 on Monday to win the tournament with an 861 total, 16 ahead of runner-up and defending-champion Oakland.
Goh, who began the day tied for 13th, finished with a 4-over 220 total, moving up six spots on the leaderboard for a solid start to her senior year. She posted five top-10 finishes in 11 tournaments last season, including a seventh at A-Ga-Ming.
Steady senior Rachel Kauflin posted her second 2-over 74 of the tournament to finish with a 225 total and in a tie for 18th after starting the day tied for 20th.
CMU freshman Rachel Niskanen, playing in her first collegiate event, posted an even-par 72 to finish at 229 and tied for 28th. Her 13-spot improvement tied her for the second biggest mover from round two to three.
The Chippewas Mackenzie Baustad shot her best round of the tournament, a 77, to move up two spots and finish tied for 45th in the 80-player field.
"It's a bit of a bonus for us to jump a few spots and finish in the top five," Williams said. "Really we were just focusing on our process today, focusing on taking it one shot at a time, being really committed to shots and being strategic.
"If you keep it simple like that you're typically going to see yourself move up a leaderboard and have some success."
Oakland's Bridget Boczar closed with a 5-under 67 to finish with a 10-under 206 to claim medalist honors. Boczar opened on Sunday with a tourney record 7-under 65. Her 206 total is also a record in the 3-year-old event.
Bellarmine's Alaina Schmitt matched Boczar with a 67 on Monday to finish second at 1-under 215.
The Chippewas are scheduled to play in the Penn State Nittany Lion Invitational on Sept. 16-17.
