Chippewas post third consecutive straight-sets league victory; entertain Ball State this weekend
MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. – Central Michigan volleyball improved to 3-0 in the Mid-American Conference on Tuesday with a straight-sets victory over Eastern Michigan at McGuirk Arena.
It's CMU's first 3-0 start to MAC play since 2019 and it was the Chippewas' eighth consecutive victory over the Eagles.
The Chippewas, who are 12-3 overall, have not dropped a set in their three MAC matches. They entertain Ball State, which is 7-6, 0-2 MAC, in two league matches this weekend.
Natalia Rejment had nine kills to lead CMU, while Krystina Kasson and Abby Olin added eight apiece, and Grace Thomas had six as the Chippewas handed Eastern Michigan its first conference loss, 25-19, 25-20, 25-15.
"We don't have to rely on one single play to give us a win every single night," CMU coach Mike Gawlik said. "We need everybody to contribute and I feel like that is the strength of us as a team.
"We're playing some good volleyball. We've got a good team coming in Ball state this weekend, and we're going to try to be 1-0 on Friday."
In set one, Central Michigan used a 10-5 run to open a 21-16 lead; the Chippewas closed the second set with a 7-2 spurt; and they led from the outset in third set, jumping out to a 13-7 lead and never letting the Eagles get closer than three points the rest of the way.
The Chippewas finished with a .303 attack percentage while limiting the Eagles (8-9) to .092.
CMU entered the match holding opponents to a MAC-best .139 hitting percentage and it marked the third straight time the Chippewas have held an opponent under .100 in a match.
CMU setter Allie Korba posted 33 assists and Hannah Langton led the Chippewas with 16 digs.
"We don't change the things we're good that, we do what we do well," Korba said. "We stay locked in and no matter who the team is across the net, nothing changes. We're playing our game."
