Cardinals capitalize on key first-half chance, second-half Chippewa flurry unable to tally the equalizer
MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. — Central Michigan Soccer fell for the first time in Mid-American Conference play in 2024 Thursday night against Ball State, 1-0, at the CMU Soccer Complex, which snapped a six-match unbeaten streak that started nearly one month ago to the day (Sept. 11 at Purdue Fort Wayne; W, 6-1).
Â
The Chippewas (4-5-4, 2-1-3 MAC) ceded the winner for the Cardinals (7-4-2, 2-2-2 MAC) in the 18th minute. A pair of quality decisions by Ball State to get the ball ahead after a CMU turnover at midfield led to well-executed attempt from just inside the 18' just outside the right post.
Â
CMU had control of set pieces throughout the contest via advantages of 5-2 in corners, 14-11 in free kicks. Claudia Muessig (Paw Paw, Mich. / Paw Paw) used two such opportunities in the final 12 minutes to tally shots on-goal after scoring the equalizer Sunday at Toledo (T, 1-1) in similar fashion.
Â
Central Michigan Soccer hits the road again Sunday for a 1 p.m. kickoff at Kent State before back-to-back home MAC contests against Bowling Green (Oct. 18) and Miami (OH) (Oct. 24).
