Cochran, Lovett post Chippewa victories; CMU goes to Little Rock on Sunday
STILWATER, Okla. – The Central Michigan wrestling team won two matches on Friday in dropping a nonconference dual to No. 22 Oklahoma, 28-6, at the Sooners' McCasland Field House.
The Chippewas (0-2) go to No. 20 Little Rock (3-0) on Sunday (2 p.m.) for a nonconference dual.
CMU's victories on Friday came from Johnny Lovett (157 pounds) and Luke Cochran (197).
Lovett, who is ranked 17th nationally by InterMat, defeated unranked redshirt freshman KJ Evans, 8-3, in sudden victory.
Lovett, who improved to 8-2, 2-0 in duals, led 2-0 when Evans scored a takedown with under 5 seconds remaining. The match went to overtime tied 3-3 because Lovett had a riding-time point.
Lovett, a graduate student, got a takedown and then a two-point near fall less than a minute into sudden victory to secure the win.
Cochran, a redshirt freshman, posted an 8-6 upset of sophomore Bradley Hill, who is ranked 29th. Cochran improved to 7-3 with his second consecutive dual-meet win over a ranked opponent.
Cochran got a takedown with 1:06 remaining in the match to break a 5-5 tie. Hill escaped quickly to pull to 8-6, but Cochran – who trailed 3-0 in the first period – held off the hard-charging Hill the rest of the way.
The dual opened at 141 and the Sooners posted back-to-back major decision wins to seize an 8-0 lead. Oklahoma (3-0) posted two more major decision victories in pulling away.
