NACOGDOCHES, Texas – Texas A&M Corpus Christi collected 14 hits including a pair of home runs on Saturday in handing Central Michigan a 13-1 nonconference baseball loss at Pilgrim's Park.
The Chippewas (1-2) are scheduled to play Stephen F. Austin on Sunday (3 p.m. ET) as they continue their season-opening trip to Texas. They are slated to play Stephen F. Austin on Tuesday and Wednesday.
"We just did not play well in any aspect of the game today," first-year CMU coach Jake Sabol said. "Our goal collectively is to put pressure on the defense and take care of the baseball and we struggled doing both of those today.
"Give Corpus credit, they made some great adjustments and played clean baseball. Our guys are excited for a quick turnaround and looking forward to getting back out there tomorrow."
CMU starter Ben Vitas (0-1) allowed eight runs (five earned) on nine hits while striking out two and walking one over 3 2/3 innings in taking the loss. Jonah Milchuck and Trevor Busyn pitched in relief for the Chippewas.
The Islanders (2-0), who opened the season on Friday with a 3-1 11-inning win over the Chippewas, scored three runs in the third inning and then added five each in the fourth and the sixth. The game was called after 6 ½ innings on the run rule.
Danny Wuestenfeld had two of CMU's five hits. Marquis Jackson homered in the seventh inning. It was his, and CMU's, first round-tripper of the season.
