Chippewas post strong start with 5-1 tally on the draw and three saves in the first quarter
CINCINNATI — Central Michigan Lacrosse dropped the last of its four-game road stretch to open the 2024 season Friday afternoon at Cincinnati in Nippert Stadium.
Â
The Chippewas flexed their muscle early on draw control as the efforts of Hanna Wenger (Loveland, Ohio / Loveland) led to a 5-1 advantage through the first 15 minutes.
Â
Sadie Hinkle (Medina, Ohio / Medina) offered a pair of goals, one each in the second and third quarters. Skye DePrado (Pittsburgh, Pa. / North Allegheny) matched Hinkle's two points, scoring CMU's first goal, then assisting Hinkle's first. Makenna Huhn (Parker, Colo. / Chaparral) struck for the final Chippewa goal in the fourth. Huhn's was the only even, live-play goal for the Chippewas as Hinkle scored once with a player up while she and DePrado each notched a free position strike.
Â
Alexa Martel (Rochester, N.Y. / Greece Olympia) collected three of her five saves in the first quarter while Sandy Edwards (Stuart, Fla. / Klein), Jozy Allen (Cincinnati, Ohio / Sycamore) and Ava Regitz (Marietta, Ga. / Blessed Trinity)—who made her first collegiate start Friday—each caused one of Cincinnati's five turnovers in the period.
Â
DePrado, the first Mid-American Conference Offensive Player of the Week in 2024, contributed on the defensive end as the team's leader in caused turnovers with one each in the second and fourth quarters.
Â
Central Michigan Lacrosse opens the CMU Lacrosse Complex Sunday at 11 a.m. hosting Canisius College (NY), and will stay in Mount Pleasant for No. 20 Colorado Thursday (Feb. 29; 3 p.m.).
