Baseball Drops Series Opener at Miami as RedHawks Rally in the 9th

OXFORD, Ohio – Miami (Ohio) scored three runs in the bottom of the ninth inning on Friday in handing Central Michigan a 3-2 loss in the opener of a three-game Mid-American Conference baseball series at the RedHawks' McKie Field at Hayden Park.
The Chippewas slipped to 3-15, 0-4 MAC. Miami is 6-9, 1-3. Game 2 of the series is Saturday with the finale set for Sunday. Both games carry a 1 p.m. start.
The loss spoiled an outstanding start by CMU left-hander Adam Mrakitsch, who tied his career high with 11 strikeouts over eight scoreless innings. He surrendered seven hits and walked two. He threw 130 pitches, 82 of them for strikes.
Mrakitsch got a strikeout to end the eighth inning and leave the bases loaded to preserve CMU's 2-0 lead.
Reliever Bryce Hellgeth (1-1) retired the first batter he faced in the ninth on a groundout, then pinch hitter Justin Groski tripled and scored on a Tyler Gordon infield single, cutting CMU's lead to 2-1.
Ty Batusich singled Gordon to third and then Zach MacDonald laid down a safety squeeze bunt to score Gordon and tie the game 3-2.
A wild pitch and an intentional walk loaded the bases, and then cleanup hitter David Novak singled up the middle to drive in the winning run.
