Softball Falls in MAC Opener to NIU

The Central Michigan Softball Team fell 4-0 to NIU to open its 2024 Mid-American Conference Campaign.
MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. – Central Michigan Softball dropped its Mid-American Conference opener to Northern Illinois 4-0 on Friday afternoon. The Chippewas fall to 3-18 overall and 0-1 in MAC play. NIU advances to 7-13 and 1-0 in the conference.
Danielle Stewart went the distance for the Huskies striking out seven and facing 30 Chippewa batters. Grace Lehto (0-10) took the loss for the Chippewas throwing five innings recording just one strikeout and giving up seven hits.
Madelyn Wallace took over in the fifth inning for Lehto as she entered with two runners on an no outs. Wallace would end the game for CMU facing the final nine batters, striking out one and allowing two hits.
The game stayed 0-0 with the two teams trading just three hits between the two squads. Northern Illinois broke the game open with a run in the top of the fifth on a sacrifice fly to left field. In the bottom of the fifth, CMU stranded the bases loaded. For the top half of the sixth, NIU scored three runs to grab the 4-0 lead. That would be the end of scoring in the game.
Central Michigan will be back in action as they take on the Huskies for two more games to close out the first MAC series of the 2024 season. The first game is slated for 1 p.m. on Saturday afternoon.
