Knorr registers seven punchouts; Verburg drives in 4 runs

MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. – Oakland scored 10 runs in its final three at-bats on Tuesday in handing Central Michigan an 11-8 loss in the Chippewas' home opener on Keilitz Field at Theunissen Stadium.

The Chippewas (4-17) entertain Ohio this weekend in a three-game Mid-American Conference series. The opener is Friday, March 22 (3 p.m.).

CMU starter Sean Knorr turned in his best appearance of the season, allowing one run on five hits over five innings. He struck out seven and left with a 4-1 lead.

Freshman Jake Brown (0-1) relieved Knorr and ran into trouble in the seventh when he allowed six runs on a pair of triples, three walks, and a hit batter as the Golden Grizzlies seized a 7-4 lead. Jonah Milchuck and Quin Konuszewski also pitched in relief for CMU.

Spencer Verburg hit a two-run double in the bottom of the seventh to draw the Chippewas to 7-6, but the Golden Grizzlies extended their lead with two runs in the eighth and two more in the ninth.

Freshman Bryson Webb hit his first career homer to lead off the game and then Mikey Muraphy, another freshman, added an RBI single to stake the Chippewas to a 2-0 first-inning lead.

Verburg hit his first career homer, a two-run shot, in the ninth inning, and Jacob Donahue finished with three hits to lead CMU at the plate.
