3/23/2024 6:52:00 PM | Baseball
Adam Mrakitsch wins game one after pitching 7.0 innings and allowing just one run, three hits and striking out eight batters; Ohio takes early lead, bangs out 21 hits in game two win.
ATHENS, Ohio – After previously rescheduling the three-game series, the Chippewas' Baseball team traveled to Athens for a doubleheader against the Ohio Bobcats in search of some crucial conference wins.
The Chippewas (5-18, 2-6) claimed the victory in game one 6-1, but fell in game two 18-3 Saturday at Bob Wren Stadium.
Central Michigan turned to pitcher Adam Mrakitsch (2-4) in game one as he started the game and allowed just one run, three hits, three walks, and struck out eight batters over seven innings pitched and 90 pitches. Bryce Hellgeth came on to pitch the final 2.0 innings and allowed no hits and no runs.
Jacob Donahue and Jake Brill finished with three hits apiece in game one, but it was Mikey Murphy who led the way for the Chippewas early in the first inning with a big three-run home run that put the Chippewas up 3-0 early.
Bryson Webb collected an RBI in the bottom of the second, sending home Ely Stuart for a fourth run of the game and 4-0 lead for Central Michigan.
Later in the bottom of the third, Jake Brill hit a sacrifice bunt to send home Mikey Murphy to extend the Chippewas lead to 5-0.
During the bottom of the fourth inning with the bases loaded, Murphy was hit by a pitch to advance bases, sending home Jacob Donahue for his second run of the game, giving Central Michigan a favorable 6-0 lead.
Ohio scored its lone run in the top of the seventh inning.
The Chippewas would eventually close things out, with Hellgeth eventually sealing the game, giving the Chippewas their second conference win on the season.
Things didn't go as accordingly in game two as they did game one.
Ohio went up 4-0 in top of the second inning after Jackson Cauthron hit a solo home run in the first inning and Gideon Antle's two-RBI double and Bryce Smith's RBI single gave the Bobcats their four-run lead in the second.
But the Chippewas battled back with three runs in the third inning. Murphy again brought some life back into the squad, driving in a run on an RBI single. Drew Stengren followed with a single up the middle that drove in two more runs to pull the Chippewas within just one run at 4-3.
However, it was all Bobcats after that, as they put home four runs in the fifth inning, two Antle's RBI double to center field and two more on Smith's home run to right field. Ohio scored nine more runs in the seventh inning in taking game two. The Bobcats outhit the Chippewas 21-9 in the contest.
Ohio's Tim Knapschae earned the victory after pitching 5.0 innings and allowed seven hits and three runs on 70 pitches. Tyler Peck threw the final four innings for a save.
CMU's Keegan Batka took the loss after throwing 5.0 innings and allowing 10 hits and eight runs.
