Central Michigan’s dependable goalie earns her fourth career conference player of the week honor after posting 28 saves over two games, setting stage for league-opening win
CLEVELAND — Junior goalie Alexa Martel (Rochester, N.Y. / Greece Olympia) of Central Michigan Lacrosse was named the Mid-American Conference Defensive Player of the Week for the second time in 2024, fourth in time in her career, Tuesday afternoon by the league's coaches.
Â
Martel was key in the Chippewas' 9-8 victory over Detroit Mercy Sunday in their conference opener, recording 10 of her 15 saves in the first half to keep the CMU attack within reach for its second-half comeback from a 7-4 deficit.
Â
The junior became the second player in the program's nine-year history to reach 300 career saves in Friday's bout with Lindenwood (L, 16-12), notching another 13 saves.
Â
Martel is just the fourth player in program history to earn a conference weekly laurel four times in her career, joining the likes of Jocelyne Lemay '19, Brianna Hart '21 and Natalie Karlen '21. She is also the second to have all four as the defensive distinction, and the first to do so exclusively through the Mid-American Conference.
The Chippewas have made three appearances in the MAC Player of the Week release this season. Martel won her first of the season on March 5 after nearly tying her own program record for saves in a game (17) against No. 19 Colorado. Skye DePrado (Pittsburgh, Pa. / North Allegheny) won the first offensive award of the season on February 13 after dropping six goals on Butler in the season-opener.
Â
Central Michigan Lacrosse will visit Marquette Friday (March 22) at 4 p.m. as the Chippewas open a three-game road stretch, visiting Youngstown State (March 31) and Pittsburgh (April 2) before their return to the CMU Lacrosse Complex April 7 to host Robert Morris.
