Ortiz continued her offensive lead since her return two weeks ago to lead with 16 points, three Chippewas land in double-digits; turnover woes strike with 21 in the first half
ATHENS, Ohio — A tale of two halves for the Central Michigan women's basketball team Saturday afternoon ultimately led to a 77-63 loss at Ohio.
Faced with a 21-point deficit, 46-25, after a Bobcat three-point play with 9:18 to go in the third, the Chippewas kept Ohio without a field goal for nearly six minutes of play; just a pair of free throws was all Central Michigan allowed during that time as the Chippewas poured in 18 points through six different players, five points from Tamara Ortiz (Columbus, Ohio / Westerville South).
Ortiz continued her redemption story Saturday, leading Central Michigan with 16 points for her third double-digit performance since returning from injury just five games prior.
Karrington Gordon (Detroit / Lincoln Park) and Capria Brown (Danville, Ill. / Schlarman) were crucial to the Chippewa offense, joining Ortiz in double figures with 12 and 10 points, respectively. Gordon's entire output came in the second half as her outside shot warmed up with two makes outside the arc, and a third with her foot on the line.
Ortiz, Brown and Madisen Wardell (Detroit / Edison PSA) shared the game high of seven rebounds on the afternoon as Central Michigan again dominated the Bobcats off the glass, 50-33. The Chippewas posted a 41-16 margin in the category over Ohio in the previous meeting in McGuirk Arena.
The Chippewas met their season per-game average for turnovers (21) through the first 20 minutes of play, falling behind by as many as 20 points in the first half ahead of the 41-25 tally at intermission. The halftime speech paid dividends as the team committed just eight giveaways in the second half, drawing to within five points with an 18-2 third quarter run.
Central Michigan Women's Basketball will stay on the road Wednesday for a 6 p.m. ET tip at Buffalo as the Chippewas' longest in-conference trip comes directly after their second-longest in Athens Saturday. The 2023-24 regular season concludes next Saturday (March 9) hosting Akron for Senior Day.
